BREAKING GROUND ON TWAIN HARTE MEADOWS PARK
After years of dreaming and planning, Twain Harte Community Services District (THCSD) is delighted to announce that Twain Harte Meadows Park (Meadows Park) is officially underway. Njirich and Sons, a contractor out of Sonora, broke ground in September and will complete the project with the help of two other local contractors – Roberson Construction and Watershed Progressive.
THCSD celebrated this milestone by holding a groundbreaking ceremony at the project site on September 14th. About 75 community members attended the event, anxious to see Meadows Park take shape. The ceremony included a moving and meaningful blessing performed by three tribal members from the Tuolumne Band of Me-wuk Indians - Cultural Resource Manager Kyle Cox, Tribal Treasurer Loren Forde and Language Program Manager Carlos Geisdorff. Senior District Representative Dana Jorgensen also attended and presented THCSD with a certificate of recognition on behalf of Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil’s office. Although the event included coffee (generously donated by the Local Press) and donuts, which have a way of drawing crowds, the main draw was the community’s excitement to see Meadows Park become a reality after several years of dreaming and waiting.
Now that construction is underway, the entire community will be able to watch the dilapidated downtown parcel be transformed into a beautiful park setting. Meadows Park will perfectly complement Twain Harte’s rustic, mountain charm with a natural meadow feel and will provide an aesthetic reminder of why people choose to live in and visit Twain Harte. The park will include a large rustic pavilion, meadow, water play area, picnic and barbecue areas, town Christmas tree, and more. Its recreation features will be chalk-full of local history and interactive education to remind future generations of the town’s rich cultural background.
Construction will continue into late fall and winter, as long as the weather remains cooperative. We anticipate that grading, underground utilities, and (maybe) some planting will be complete before winter. Pavilion construction will likely be on and off through the winter and should be complete in late spring when the restrooms will be set. We are planning for the park to be open in early fall 2024, but if all goes incredibly well, it may be open this coming summer.
We would like to thank our amazing community for coming together around this project. Meadows Park is far from a THCSD project - it is a community project. It was born in 2017 when Julie Cowell donated the land to THCSD for the purpose of creating a park where families and friends could gather to enjoy our town’s unique mountain beauty. It then became the community’s project as hundreds of residents collaborated in design workshops to develop a design that best reflected Twain Harte. Meadows Park is truly a community project - it began together and we look forward to watching it take shape together.
We maintain an email list of community members who want to be involved in this great community project and will be sending out regular updates as construction progresses. If you are interested in being included in these updates, please email THCSD at info@twainhartecsd.com.
